Unlike introductory HIPAA Security or HIPAA Privacy & Security courses — which focus on awareness and basic compliance — the CHSO program is built for decision-makers and security leaders. It goes beyond 'what the rule says' to explain how HIPAA Security is operationalized, governed, monitored, and sustained across real-world healthcare and healthcare-supporting organizations.
The program delivers a structured, chapter-based curriculum aligned directly to the HIPAA Security Rule safeguard framework.
Program Curriculum
The CHSO Course Series covers all three safeguard categories defined by the HIPAA Security Rule:
- Administrative Safeguards — Security governance, assigned security responsibility, risk analysis and risk management, workforce security, access management, training and awareness, incident response procedures, contingency planning, evaluation, and business associate security oversight
- Physical Safeguards — Facility access controls, workstation use and security, and device and media handling practices essential for reducing physical access risk to electronic protected health information (ePHI)
- Technical Safeguards — Access controls, audit controls, integrity mechanisms, authentication, and transmission security, providing learners with a strong conceptual foundation for evaluating and overseeing technical security controls

Learning Format

- An optional CHSO Bootcamp is strongly recommended and scheduled in advance as it is not always available.
- The CHSO Certification Exam is offered online and in person at scheduled times.
- Certification Exam information will be emailed to applicant at time of completion of courses. Exams will be conducted online and can be scheduled accordingly. Applicants are allowed one retest.
